There have been a couple of distinct and different “versions” of the web – the first iteration which was completely text based and more than a little difficult to use, the web 2.0 version that was all kinds of shiny and bubbly – but now we have a new version of the web. We’re in the middle of the social media revolution and it’s playing a huge role in how we do business.

The new web is built around social interactions and visitor relationships

The new web is all about connecting with people, and the old way of telling them exactly what you’re all about with corporate speak and the usual run around is over and dead for good. Regular people are now your brand ambassador, and never before have companies been held to such a high standard across the board. Even a single slip up from a brand new employee can get legs on Twitter and have long lasting and amazingly negative repercussions – we are only as good as the global online community tells others we are.

There is a positive flip side to this level of exposure though, and a massive point in leveraging this amazing tool for building brand awareness. For the first time in the history of commerce we can interact and share information back and forth with customers during all cycles of business, not just when we are selling them something. This gives us an amazing amount of laser targeted data, something we just didn’t have access to in the past.

Social media is the ultimate driver of word of mouth advertising and gives you massive marketing leverage

On top of that, social media has also given us the kind of global reach and viral capability that no other business in the history of man has been able to enjoy.  With just the click of a button anything and everything we every say or is said about us can reach across the world with a snowball like effect of influence – this is the highest form of leverage ever made possible. Even more important is the fact that it can happen at any time, and for the low, low cost of totally free. This is the kind of messaging power than businessmen around the globe have been dreaming about, and it has the power to literally create overnight and instant business empires.
